OCCUPATION:
EAMES GREW UP ON THE STREETS, MAN. THE SOUTH LONDON GHETTOS.
No, I'm sorry. Every single word of that was a lie, except maybe London.
Eames' personal history is a pretty close-guarded secret. It is a tale that starts in England. In the south, for Eames is unmistakably southern. The information one may be privy to if he ever feels like sharing even that much is that his powers manifested in his early teens. After the initial freaking out and learning to deal with it was learning to control it. Everything he can do so far is pretty much self-taught, and it started there. Observing people, learning to mimic other people, right down to the little details. It was hard work and a lot of practice, but damn was it ever satisfying when he started being able to pick out and replicate these details with the barest amount of effort on his part.
Eames being Eames, and hardly the most scrupulous of people, eventually found his way into corporate espionage. It was good money, but honestly he was in it far more for the thrill - something about being able to pull off another persona so perfectly that you could just walk into a building, talk to their friends, bypass security and see the things you're really not to be seeing was entirely enthralling to our young polymorph.
Of course, no matter how good you or your colleagues are, it's hardly the most stable or safe profession. But he got lucky, and instead of serving a nice jail sentence after a botched operation, he managed to get drafted into S.H.I.E.L.D.. He'd like to say he charmed his way in, but honestly it was more to do with the fact that someone with his skillset could come in pretty damn handy. A skilled shapeshifter could get them into all sorts of places that it would take them months or even years to get in to otherwise. Though there was no real training available to him for his powers per se, they offered him plenty of opportunity to learn all about his mutation. All the documentation on demonstrated uses of shapeshifting that his security clearance could get him. Plus the standard firearms training, hand-to-hand, etcetera.
After some time doing the whole gathering information on foot thing, he was introduced to another mutant they had working a similar job, by vastly different methods. He had the power to pull people's subconsciousnesses into dreams, and was therefore apt to extract key information straight out of their heads. Eames was introduced primarily to make people more receptive to the dreams that were being built, be it with a familiar face, a pretty face, or whatever else they needed. All in all it was an amazing way for him to stretch his powers, and it would be an out and out lie to say that he wasn't fascinated by getting to poke around in people's heads so directly.
Sadly, all good things must eventually end and the team eventually dissolved. Normal work (for a relative quality of "normal," anyway) didn't quite have the same jive to it anymore either, and Eames eventually had to take his leave.
Being a mutant means, however, that Eames was grounded in the US for the time being. Though he has the connections to get him out of the States if need be, he'd really rather not use them up so soon, especially without knowing how long this flight ban could last. Fortunately, he got word from several colleagues that in the current climate, unless he wants to turn back to a Life Of Crime, his best bet was quite possibly some of the people working at the Xavier Institute.
And so, via healthy doses of Eames deciding he totally had something to offer young mutants, and finding it a necessary stopgap (one does not simply walk back into S.H.I.E.L.D. after all), he wrote a lovely job application and made his way to the Institute.
PERSONALITY:
Eames is someone who - especially personally speaking, rather than professionally - can be incredibly frustrating to know. It can be easy to see him as having a fairly antagonistic personality, but for the most part he's actually quite pleasant and personable. It seems more that antagonism is how he reacts to animosity in other people. Rather than get embroiled in bitter sniping matches and such, he prefers to react with light sarcasm and small pushes. That's not to say he's above being a massive jerkbutt, because he most assuredly is not, he just prefers to go about it in a more jovial manner.
He does not, however, ever let his feelings on people interfere with his work. He's well aware of the benefits and shortcomings people bring to the table, working with and around that. In terms of his work, he does have something of a playful manner, but he is nothing short of a professional, and in that regard he is someone who can be pretty fucking handy to know.
Eames is someone renowned for his imagination. He is a definite go-to guy for the ideas and theories that you may well need but would probably never think of yourself. This was probably his biggest asset in SHIELD and also ties into some key powers of observation. To further and effectively use his power without getting sussed out, Eames has to be able to observe people and pick out the little details in their personalities in quite a short time. Even figuring out all the little details in their motivations and their interactions. There is definitely a degree of personal curiosity about people and their minds at work here to make him good at his job.
Eames has a keen sense of preservation tucked away in there too, he seems like the type to jump in with both feet, but that's more just a good ability to think on his feet at work. He's not a fan of unnecessary risks and takes a keen interest in his own personal safety before anyone else's.
APPEARANCE:
Eames stands pretty comfortably at a bit over 5'9 with a fairly broad build, though not exceptionally large or anything. He's clearly a bloke with a bit of heft to him and packs quite the punch though. He has a bit of an olive complexion, but he does manage to go quite pink sometimes too. He has blue eyes, a "tasteful" (well, he probably thinks it is at least) dusting of facefuzz and short, brown hair that is usually given a nice side parting and combed back nice and smoothly.
Oh, and one musn't forget the leisure suits. They are a staple of his wardrobe.
POWERS:
Shapeshifting!I have a problem.Generally speaking, even though he theoretically could do more, he's pretty restricted to human forms. He's put a lot of time and effort into learning the full extent of his powers in this area - learning to do junk like heal wounds, enhance senses. All sorts of fun junk. AND NEVER HAVE TO WEAR CLOTHES. He still does because being technically naked all the time is a little bit weird, but he totally doesn't have to.
He still has yet to reach the full potential of what a shapeshifter can actually do - who knows if he ever will - but he is incredibly accomplished.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Excelsior! o7
- RP SAMPLES
First-person sample:
Right. [clears his throat] I'm Eames, I'll be taking you for Creative Thinking for the foreseeable future.
I'd like to blather on about why you should take this class and all the fascinating things I have to teach you-- not to be too arrogant before we've even met, but creative thought is a speciality of mine. But really, I think you'd have to come to the class yourself to really know what's in it for you, mm?
Oh and-- Try to be on time. I mark down for poor punctuality.
Third-person sample:
Eames is no stranger to the idea of doing odd jobs for a little extra income. SHIELD pays well enough, but really the cash is a secondary motivator.
It's like a game he likes to play, and sure his work is fascinating and he'd hate to leave it behind, but he has so little creative control when he has to constantly report back to a supervisor and justify his methods. He'd never call himself an artist - he borders on narcissistic, but he's not pretentious - but it can be rather stifling. It makes things difficult.
So he needs the occasional odd job, like this one. He stands in front of the mirror, long legs and pale skin and auburn hair. Switching back and forth between ivory and midnight blue dresses for what seems like ages. It needs to be perfect, after all. He needs to be the perfect woman - a phrase that strikes him as odd in how it doesn't feel the least bit odd to think anymore - to open this man up. To make him smile and let his guard down and let Eames in for a night so he can pluck those security codes from his mind.
He smiles faintly as he passes a colleague in the restaurant and they don't recognise him, saunters over like a vision in ivory chiffon and lace and carefully chosen gold accents (or he would hope he looks like a vision, he did spend the vast majority of the day putting together the best hair-clothes-accessories combination and practising a warm-honey-smooth voice with the barely-there southern accent for this job. He'd be offended if a few jaws didn't drop in appreciation.) and whispers in their ear, looking like little more than someone putting in a special request for the chef. "I'll have it by midnight, don't you worry."
It isn't until he pulls back and raises his eyebrows in a way that is so unmistakably Eames that he remembers the job and nods his understanding. Suddenly, Eames is very confident - arrogant, even - about his ability to pull this off without a hitch.
