Further to how Undergrounds made Eames an angrier person than he was going in, Deerington really took that and cranked it up to 5,000. Eames spent essentially 2 years on the precipice of a full existential meltdown, (whether it’s a good thing that it was ultimately averted is up for debate,) which made him more withdrawn and somehow even angrier. Being home for a short while has tempered that somewhat, but it’s still a significant change to his baseline that he has to work through.
My current plan is for being in Trench to give Eames the push to experiment with his magic, since up until this point he’s not cared much about it outside the skills that come naturally to him. Potentially even moving toward becoming a Disciple in some way. Because there’s a lot of overlap between the powers he has and what a Darkblood can do, the two should essentially come to meld and compliment eachother.
That’s all to say, he’ll at least start with a fairly competent idea how to use his blood powers. He won’t be able to do much with them because it’s something Eames will have to choose to explore, but he already uses his telekinesis and his illusions quite freely and I think it’d be fun to have that as his jumping off point with a little small-scale altering time just to be… Incredibly inconvenient. Extremely localised and small pockets of sped-up or slowed down time. Imagine trying to move your coffee and it’s cold by the time it gets to your hands. Absolutely dreadful.
Eames' canon history is literally just the plot of Inception, plus the fact that he knows Dom and Arthur somehow. But we're not playing with canon Eames, no sir. We're playing with his AU self fromundergrounds, and the history I applied to the game with is very short and sweet and is as follows:
Eames wasn't born to any fae of note or anything like that, but he was taught from a young age what it meant to be Unseelie. No overly strong familial ties in his family, but it was always important to them not to be embarrassed by the people with the strongest ties to you. It meant learning to purport oneself with the right type of dignity, like armour. The façade is just as useful a tool as magic, when used correctly.
A lesson he learned well, but no one 'close' to him really agreed with the way he chose to enact it.
Eames learned relatively young that he was just fascinated with Earth, the way it was so different, so small compared to the Other Realm. The way all the different kinds of mortal scurry about with their limited awareness and their little dreams. He started spending a lot more time there than most - learning what he could, learning to imitate humanity so that he could move amongst them without seeming alien. He spent a lot of time ingratiating himself with the less, ah... Perceptive denizens of the world. Never anyone too significant for fear of drawing the gaze of someone who'll see him for what he really is, but a decent enough web of connections - people who owe him or just people he's managed to trick into thinking he's someone they can trust for whatever reason. It might not seem too useful at first, but even a fae needs to find something every now and then.
After a while, he managed to spin this to his advantage. Instead of it being a love affair with the mortal realm, he made himself stand out as something of an expert within the Unseelie Court. Making a hobby of doing "favours" and collecting debts, almost in competition with the other fae around him. It made him the kind of person they could call on when they needed something from that realm. A debt collected, a particular person found. That sort of thing. The respect of the court comes with more personal autonomy - people are more likely to leave you be when you're not just useful to them, but respectable. Dignified. Someone whose unafraid to carve a station for themself in blood and ice. Those are qualities that Eames would like to say that he has.
He's still relatively young, but he's certainly an up-and-comer in the court. At least if he had to guess for himself.
I'm gonna be honest with you, things escalated a lot very fast, this might get long.
Over the course of the game, the Fae presence in London decreased along with anti-Fae sentiment increasing in the form of some very vocal witches, and a bunch of others who like a convenient scapegoat for whatever gripes they had. There were several instances of faction behaviour that affected the fae negatively, starting with Night Council legislation that banned the use and creation of fae doors in various boroughs, (their method of travel between realms,) which was a clear starting place in an initiative to stamp out their presence completely. Something Eames took great issue with since he takes his freedom very seriously, plus he'd describe London as his home almost as much as Faery.
General inaction on the part of both fae courts lead him (and a few others,) to take action, having to involve himself in politics even though he hates it. Taking the reins, Eames made deals with several leaders in the city and took territory in the mortal realm, something previously unheard of, in order to secure some degree of safety. As his station grew, becoming a lesser lord, and his power alongside it, Eames rigged an election to secure a somewhat sympathetic (or at least less militant) ear on the Council. He also dealt with his biggest problem at the time, one Mr. Gilbert Norrell, by sealing him away in some kind of hideous spell and made it look like enough of an accident to get away with it without repercussion.
(It probably helped that nobody particularly liked Norrell anyway.)
Things were quiet for a time, (meaning the fae weren't actively under threat,) though there was some unrest in other factions that Eames took advantage of to try and make his foothold in London a little more secure, rising to become the Lord of Autumn during this time. Unfortunately upheaval among the vampires became a problem, in that a new leader was a murderous scumbag who didn’t take kindly to Eames’ refusal to ally with them, basically declaring it open season on the fae alongside the werewolves. But it’s fine. Eames helped violently depose him later.
Oh isn’t that great it’s all chill now NOPE. Soon enough the witches got a new leader whose position on fae in London was “serve us or fuck off,” even brazenly extending an “offer” to Eames to become her familiar. In fact she went so far as to bring back laws allowing summoning magic and illegally kidnapping fae, essentially torturing them into one-sided familiar contracts to serve her and the Circle. All of this she flaunted, playing it up as a new age for witches. Eventually, Eames did manage to seal her magic, though she does fake still being a witch rather well and maintains her position as Mother of Witches. Shame she doesn’t have the means to follow through on any of those plans or promises anymore though, huh?
The short version is that over his time as a fae lord, Eames has been pushed deeper and deeper into a political game that he has never had any interest in in order to keep some semblance of freedom. This has, in turn, made him a much less forgiving or patient person. Basic disposition shifting from laissez-faire and sometimes even playful, to tired and angry. He has been unwillingly carrying the safety of his people on his shoulders and pushing back against powerful enemies with little support from the people he’s trying to protect and become very powerful in a very short space of time, things he’s never been prepared for or wanted. It’s all been very deeply exhausting, there’s some irony here to being drawn into a dream without being able to enjoy the sleep accompanying it.
He did also form some significant bonds, but none of them particularly changed him as a person so honestly who cares.
So the personality from hisundergrounds app was as follows:
Eames is someone who affects a surprisingly relatable personality, how much is real and how much is an act is anyone's guess, but it's certainly good for drawing unsuspecting humans to him. A keen believer that "friends" are more valuable than those who're indebted after all, he'll often even go out of his way to make people think he's trustworthy. Even making the terms of a bargain sound favourable when they're not in the least. He does well to hide that fact that he thinks "friendship" is a weakness, something to exploit rather than nurture. It's extraordinarily rare for Eames to care about someone as more than entertainment or a tool, and rarer still for him to care enough not to leave someone by the wayside the second they become a real liability to him.
Politically speaking, Eames hasn't ever cared too much about power. Not someone who has huge ambitions for moving through the court, there's too much responsibility with being a Lord or a King. Too many eyes watching. He cares more about finding the sweet spot where he's trusted to be left to his own devices most of the time - where people trust his judgement and aren't always watching, and no one's interested in picking him off for their own ambitions.
He's fascinated by humans and the others in the ~real world~ in a way fae usually aren't. Not so far as to say he wishes he was one of them or anything so gauche, but he's spent a lot of time learning about them. Their history, politics, and so on. He spends almost all of his free time in the mortal realm and sometimes it shows - he sometimes finds his thoughts skewed towards the mundane, though he does his best not to let that show. A side-effect of intentionally trying not to make himself seem too fantastic, to stand out too much. Sometimes he worries humanity may be rubbing off on him.
His interpersonal manner is by and large playful, in many ways he regards life as a game, but a game he's playing by himself with rules he'll never tell. He has a certain skill with reading people that makes it easy to joke in a way they'll respond to, or to poke at them in a way he knows will wind them up. (Though he tends not to try and upset people intentionally unless they're someone he just cannot stand for whatever reason. It's bad business.) In this way, he can be someone kind of jarring to speak to when things are at stake. He'll switch gears between this and a purely businesslike attitude like it's nothing when negotiating, and his anger is something else entirely. It's difficult to really get him riled up like that, to say the least, but his anger is a cold fury. If he feels slighted he will make it his mission to destroy someone, a keen believer that death is rarely a suitable punishment.
As per hisundergrounds app:
Powers & Possessions:In terms of physical strength, Eames is tough but it's nothing that would out him as supernatural. He's certainly never been afraid to get into a scuffle (and honestly, he kind of enjoys them,) but he's as expected for a guy his size, and more skilled along the lines of learning from 500 years of bar brawls than any kind of actual training.
Seeing as he hasn't managed to make himself an outcast just yet, (though occasionally it seems like he's really skirting that line,) Eames still has the standard abilities of his kind, though his personal strengths lie in illusions and shape-changing. Moreover, he's incredibly adept at replicating things and people he's already seen. Anyone he's watched long enough, he can imitate with incredible believability, and whilst he may not be reliably able to replicate the finer details of a scene, he can imitate the feel of it so well that the finer points become moot. It's amazing, after all, what humans would give for a glimpse of something that should be left alone.
He is curious, also, about the nature of enchanting and infusing an item with part of his power. This is something he experiments with a lot when he's in the Other Realm and has the time to himself, but he can't yet seem to do much than make a ring "lucky" or a bracelet that'll make someone punch a little harder. It's not something that comes quite as naturally to him.
But I accidentally made Eames a bit of a powerhouse, which I'm going to try and pare down. I'm obviously amenable to any additional nerfs the mods think necessary.
In the game, he was magic level 7, which is described as "Reality-changing territory now. These guys can really mess with your head." And strength level 2, "Some enhanced strength and endurance beyond human ability." Which means he's physically strong enough to be a nuisance, and magically strong enough to be a problem. Luckily for everyone, he doesn't really know any reality-bending magic.
Eames' natural talents lie in shape-changing and illusions. (In fact he was, for a time, titled Lord of Illusions in his court.) He specialises in creating realistic illusions and glamours that can affect just a person or an area, say the size of a city block, in ways that can alter one's perception. Or just make it real pretty. (Because of his experience, he also has a natural skill for seeing through and breaking others' illusions. Obviously, this is on a case-by-case basis (with player permission) in practice.) And physically he's able to change his body to look like just about anyone, having a few favourite personas he likes to use for different reasons.
(He's very particular that this is shape changing and not shifting, that's something else and lesser where he's from.)
He has the experience and magic to make potions, though to save everyone a headache I'm inclined to just blanket say he can't do it in Deerington for whatever reason. Lack of ingredients maybe? The same with his ability to enchant items. Maybe whatever Deerington is just stops him using his own magic that way.
Similarly, he was able to undo any spell cast by a witch if he knew their True Name, but let's just say that's another thing he can't do in Deerington for magic reasons. He was also able to open "doors" between his realm (Faery, the Other Realm, whatever,) and the mortal realm. Obviously that's another thing he can't do in Deerington and he is annoyed about it.
As a victor of a tournament, he gained the ability to sense memories from… Basically anything he can touch. He doesn't really have the experience with it to hone in on specific memories and anything with a lot of emotion tied to it tends to come to the surface first. (For example.) He is, at least, able to usually only do it on purpose at this point. I think it'd be pretty cool to restrict this to memories where the prevailing emotion was fear.
During his time, he's developed telekinesis, because he's just born to be a nuisance. Limited to anything up to the approximate size/weight of a person.
He is immortal, and has gone so far as to tie his life essence to a piece of fossilized wood to make him that little bit harder to kill, it has to be destroyed to kill him completely. In Deerington, however, instead he'll be a little tough to put down but not the same way; having to be killed with silver. Though you can get creative with it, it doesn't have to just be a weapon.
A particular skill afforded to him by his species is the ability to see magical beings for what they are and get a sense of how strong they are. Depending on player permission, obviously
As a fae, he also has the most annoying weaknesses ever when it comes to being a thief and professional liar. I'm gonna copy them straight from the game's info post because it's much clearer and more succinct than what I had written.• Poisoned by iron and silver. Silver is worse than iron: touching iron will burn them, whereas fae feel sick and nauseous even in the presence of silver.
• Can be warded off by the use of herbs such as rosemary.
• Cannot enter a household unless explicitly invited in by someone who lives there. Invitations can later be rescinded, forcing the fae to leave.
• Cannot make false promises; all fae must keep their word.
• Cannot tell a direct lie. (Although they are very good at lying by omission.)
• If the true name of a fae is known, witches can use it to summon the fae and force them to do their bidding.
• Can be trapped or bound by magic.
• The use of fairy ointment allows other species to see through fae illusions.
In non-magical skills, Eames is a dab hand at counterfeiting, especially legal documents, with a good few centuries’ experience under his belt. His interest in mortals has also made him highly adaptable, the advent of technology means that things are continually changing on all fronts at a rapid pace and he needs to be able to keep up. He’s adept with firearms, though the wealth of his experience is with pistols, and a real good brawler. You know, the hallmarks of a career criminal before all this politics happened.
